Troop 29 will embark on our annual trek through 9 miles of Harriman State Park on the weekend of September 20-21, 2008. There will be two paths taken. The long path, which fulfills the 5 mile hike requirement, will start in Suffern with an overnight at a lean-to and in tents. Some people will undertake a shorter hike of about 2 miles, starting at the Church in the Woods in early afternoon, carrying tents and supplies. All hikers will leave Sunday morning and be picked up around 9 AM at an outlet on Gate Hill Road.
Hikers should bring lunch for Saturday and a quick breakfast for Sunday morning, and as much water as can be carried, at least 3 liters. The troop will provide MREs for Saturday dinner, which will be distributed at the meeting on 9/17.
It is a tough walk, but everyone should carry extra socks, dry underwear, and a light jacket or sweatshirt. Check the weather forecast to see what else is needed.
The Troop will meet at Mr. Mooney's house at 7 AM on Saturday and be dropped off at the Suffern trail head at about 8 AM. We will need some parents to drop off Saturday morning and pick-up Sunday morning. Please discuss your availability with the leaders at the meeting on 9/17.
The map shows the starting points for the long walk and the short walk, the location of the leanto where will camp for the evening, and the pickup point for Sunday morning. Click on the SAT or TER buttons to get a different view of the area.
