Boy Scout Troop 29 is based in Congers, NY. We are chartered through the Veteran’s Memorial Association.
On Friday, November 4, 2011, Troop 29 set out on a weekend trip to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
After a quick dinner stop, we arrived at our hotel at about 10pm. We had an early day, so as soon as the rooms were assigned, all scouts and adults went to sleep.
Saturday was an awesome day! We woke up, and after getting ready for our day, enjoyed a buffet breakfast in our hotel.
After breakfast, we went on our first tour. It was a guided tour of historic Annapolis, which happens to be the Capitol of the State of Maryland. We learned how people during colonial times lived, what they ate, and what items were traded in the region.
Next, it was on to the Naval Academy. One of Troop 29′s Eagle Scouts, Matt O’Dowd, who is currently a second year Midshipmen at the academy, provided us with a guided tour of the grounds. Thanks Matt!
Our final stop of the day was the Navy versus Troy football game. Prior to the game, lunch was provided by the Annapolis Elks Club. Navy went on to soundly defeat Troy, 42-14.
Back at the hotel on Saturday, we had had a pizza dinner, then went swimming in the hotel’s pool.
We returned to the Naval Academy on Sunday to shop and have lunch before returning home.
Thanks to Mr. Mooney and Dr. O’Dowd for making all of the trip arrangements!

This past weekend, Troop 29 went on it’s annual hiking trip to Bear Mountain. As we started, the first couple of miles were easy. But, then we encountered our first set of really steep cliffs!
When we broke for lunch, we saw a rattlesnake on top of one of the cliffs. I think everyone had the best lunch of their lives that day watching and talking about the snake!
The last miles were torture for some of the younger scouts. The older scouts reached camp about an hour before the rest of the group, because we had to take breaks and sit a while.
When we reached camp, we found out that the lean-to the adults usually stay in was already occupied. We did not bring enough tents, so, instead of 2 scouts to a tent, we had to sleep 3 scouts to a tent. It was not a fun night, and many did not get a good night’s sleep.
Dinner consisted of Meals-Ready-To-Eat (MRE), the same meals eaten by U.S. soldiers when they are in the field.
In the morning, we hiked back down the mountain, where we were met by Mr. Mancino and Mr. Schiering. Everyone was happy, as they brought us a breakfast of donuts, coffee, hot chocolate, and orange juice!

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, the troop assembled to celebrate our newest Eagle Scout, Anthony Trevino.
As his Eagle project, Anthony rebuilt the rock wall located near the baseball fields at Germonds Park in West Nyack. The wall was originally built by farmers in order to divide their lands. It stands as a symbol of the past in Rockland County. In addition to rebuilding the wall, which is more than 100 feet long, Anthony cleaned up the area by raking leaves and pulling weeds surrounding the area.
Congratulations Anthony!!!
